Claim EV charging costs

Charge at home or at public stations? You can claim the electricity back, like fuel.

Pick one method for your car for the whole FBT year (1 April to 31 March). You can switch at the start of the next one.

Method 1: Fixed rate

Best if you mostly charge at home.

  • We pay you 5.47c for every km you drive. That's the ATO rate from 1 April 2026 (it was 4.20c before then).
  • Send a photo of your odometer, monthly or yearly, submitted as a Claim in the app.
  • Public charging: if your car's app shows what share of charging was at home, we use the rate on those kilometres and you claim public charging with receipts. If it doesn't, you can't claim public charging on top of the rate.
Example
You drive 1,500 km in a month.
1,500 × 5.47c = $82.05
Total claim: $82.05

Method 2: Actual cost

Best if you want to claim exactly what you spent.

Each month, send:

  • the kWh used for charging, from your charger, your car's screen or your car's app
  • your electricity bill showing your rate per kWh
  • receipts for any public charging
  • a usage report from your employer, if you charge at work
Example
Your car used 180 kWh at home at 30c per kWh: $54.00
Plus two public charges: $26.00
Total claim: $80.00

Driving a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)?

You can use either method. The fixed rate works differently, because it only pays for the kilometres you drove on electricity. It's worked out once a year:

  • Total kilometres: from your odometer readings at the start and end of the FBT year.
  • Petrol kilometres: how much fuel you bought, divided by your car's official hybrid-mode fuel economy figure (from the manufacturer).
  • Electric kilometres: total minus petrol. We pay 5.47c for each one.

So you'll need an odometer reading on 1 April and 31 March, and your fuel receipts for the whole year.

Example
You drive 15,000 km in the year.
You bought $1,000 of fuel, about 505 litres.
Your car uses 5 litres per 100 km in hybrid mode, so 505 litres is about 10,100 km on petrol.
15,000 − 10,100 = 4,900 electric km
4,900 × 5.47c = $268.03

Which one suits you?

  • Want it simple: fixed rate. Odometer readings, no electricity bills.
  • Want exact costs: actual cost. More paperwork each month, but it can get you more back if your power is expensive.

Good to know

  • For actual cost, your electricity bill alone isn't enough. It shows your rate, but not how much went into the car.
  • If your claim covers March and April, send it as two claims. The fixed rate can change on 1 April.
